Yesterday we figured out what we want to grow.. Now to figure out how much. A Lot..
But we need to be more specific than that. How many plants, how much one plant yields, etc. Its a huge mathematical equation. I am not fond of math. The blogger who created this challenge had a different method than I am going to use here. I could sit down and figure out how much of each we would need each year. But not today.
For example, we use 10#'s of potatoes each week. In a year we consume 5,650 lbs of potatoes. That's a lot of taters!! We could use 3 times that in tomatoes.`
But for practical planning purposes, this year we are going to plant one plant per family member of each vegetable/fruit/herb. If we are blessed, excess will be traded or donated. If we are short, we will rely on the grocery store and farmers markets.

Holy huge garden! I hope it grows really really well this year for you.
ReplyDeleteI sort of did it differently too. I did finish though. I can't say it's accurate. Just curious, but if you used ten pounds a week, wouldn't that be 520 pounds a year? I didn't know if there was another calculation I missed. Either way, that's a lot of potatoes. Tomatoes too! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are able to get a cool garden going soon. It will help take your mind off things.
yeah, I need to fix that.. I wrote this blog at like 2am.. LOL
DeleteYou can plant carrots and beets right now and probably a few other things. At the first of March you can plant sugar snap peas (don't bother with regular peas if you don't have a sheller) and other things, too. Of course, that's for our area. You can go to your county extension office and get loads of info for your specific county. There is a county agent that is there just to answer your questions. Can't wait to get started ourselves!

ReplyDeleteI just found your blog, so I"ll look around and see if you have some posted, but you must have some awesome potato recipes to go through that many in a year, I'd love if you would share some (or more than some). It would help my grocery budget immensely, growing our own potatoes is on our plan for next year, this year we are going to try our own corn for popping, amongst other new crops in our tiny tiny yard.
ReplyDeleteHappy Day!
